The newly decked out barge and her sister ship, the renowned and well loved, Fingal of Caledonia climbed the locks at Muirtown together, providing a unique spectacle for the many passers-by.With just 12 guests on each trip, the firm offers a variety of cruises on the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness during the holiday season. The company are well used to the attention with cruises on the Fingal of Caledonia being featured widely in the press and television. Having sailed on both Fingal & Ross Crana since 2002 my wife Pat &.myself have made 20 trips. Although there have been a limited number of crew changes, Martin & his team has a good record of replacing them Once again we shall be cruising on Ross Crana hoping to see others returning & new guests. If you decide to travel on one of the barges make sure you have a few inches growth on your clothes as the menu is very tempting.

We h ave spent the last year pulling together a website that we are extremely happy with and we think you will be too. Aside from lots of information about the cruises and the company, it has an ‘all singing all dancing’ online booking system that is very simple to use. Fingal the Rescuers!

Three German tourists found themselves grounded on the rocky shores of Loch Ness when their cruise vessel lost power.

An emergency broadcast by the Coastguard watch team in Aberdeen was heard by the Fingal‘s crew and they immediately deployed their daughter craft to the location of the distressed family, a distance of approximately three miles.

A tow was established and the disabled cruiser was pulled from the rocks just as the RNLI Loch Ness lifeboat volunteers arrived on scene.

The lifeboat then towed the cruiser to a safe mooring immediately alongside the Fingal at Foyers harbour.

RNLI Loch Ness volunteer helm, Stuart Latham says: “This clearly illustrates how seriously the Fingal‘s crew take the safety not only of their own passengers and crew but of any other loch user. I am glad we were able to contribute to the positive holiday experience of the German tourists.”

The Atlantic 75 class lifeboat was crewed by Linda Ross, Joy Cameron and Stuart Latham

The entire rescue effort was coordinated by HM Coastguard in Aberdeen.

Wild Swimming is an increasingly popular activity on our cruises. The barges lend themselves really well as a base for swimming in the lochs of the Great Glen, just watch out for Nessie! From family groups to seasoned open water swimmers a dip in a lovely fresh water loch appeals on a summers day, especially when you can hop straight in a powerful hot shower afterwards!

Totally agree with other reviewers -Ros Crana and her crew are just THE BEST ! The spotlessly clean and cosy rooms, the wonderful shared meals and laughter aboard this barge made it one of ( if not THE !)
best holiday I ever had .
Cannot recommend highly enough if you love the outdoors ( walking/cycling) and great company

We went on a mini cruise in Sept 2018 and it was the best 4 days of our Scottish holiday!
The crew were so competent, relaxed and friendly that the whole trip was a delight. The barge was cosy and comfortable (the weather was fairly cold!) and the food hearty and delicious. We had such fun at meal times when all guests and crew members sat together at a large table, sharing food and experiences. The crew gave us a delightful Scottish evening at the end of the cruise and I will never forget the passionate rendition of 'Addressing the Haggis', which would have graced the professional stage. The scenery was outstanding, but, without a doubt, the energy, friendliness and relaxed professionalism of the 4 crew members made this a cruise to remember. I would recommend the company wholeheartedly.

At 117km long, the Great Glen Way is the third longest walking route in Scotland. It leads from Fort William, a popular west coast town for outdoor enthusiasts, to the vibrant city of Inverness on the eastern coast of Scotland.

It’s a unique route for many reasons. The gentle gradient marks it as a relatively easy walk for beginners to enjoy while the scenery makes it attractive regardless of your ability and fitness levels. What’s more, it follows the Caledonian Canal, offering opportunities for activities on the water as well as the luxury of a barge holiday in Scotland.

Accommodation on the Great Glen Way

If you’re planning to walk the Great Glen Way in Scotland, you’ll need accommodation. However, Caledonian Discovery offers a unique alternative to the usual bed and breakfast in the Scottish Highlands. Walking Stages of the Great Glen Way

If you do plan to walk the entire length, the Great Glen Way splits very easily into six sections. Our cruises follow a similar route, so wherever you call it a day, we’ll be nearby to pick you up. Typically, you’ll find the split follows these stopping points, although they can be varied:
Fort William to Gairlochy 17km
Gairlochy to Laggan 19km
Laggan to Fort Augustus 17km
Fort Augustus to Invermoriston 12 km
Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit 23 km
Drumnadrochit to Inverness 29km

Ros Crana, Ros Crana, you are the best

Head and shoulders above the rest.

The crew are superb, the top of their game,

Coping with floods, blizzards and rain.

Let’s start with Tree – Queen of the Galley

When tired and hungry, her cakes make us rally.

She looked after us with cooking sublime

But, alas, I fear an increased waistline.

Andrew, whilst going out for a drink

Slipping on the gang way – it was an ice rink

Although he landed up in A&E,

He was on duty next morning, bright as could be.

Chris has led us up hill and dale

Encouraging us – no one will fail.

But I know the secret of his success,

An endless supply of chocolate eggs.

Lucy’s duties are many, an excellent bo’sun.

Believe me, behind the wheel, she can go some.

She’s never happier than when covered in grease

The extent of her talents just never cease.

Martin, the skipper and overall boss

Has moved mountains to make this trip poss.

Through flooding and breaching and other clitches,

Cross winds, foul weather, a First Mate with stitches.

We came here an adventure to seek

We’ve done it and had a fabulous week.

However, I think it fair to mention

We nearly ruined Martin’s reputation.

At blackening the name of Martin & Co.

During the season we are lucky to have the company of many fine, interesting people. At the end of each week’s adventure parting is usually hard, but it is time to move on. We have recently received this lovely poem from one of our guests, after her time aboard Fingal, which she is happy to share.

On the Great Northern Glen; it was Scotland you ken,

Sailed a girl and four men who were skilful

On a vessel quite grand, aye the best in the land,

They would guide her, though oft’ she was wilful.

Each crew member trained and devoted,

Their skills they applied, each with ease and with pride,

Down the Great Glen we blissfully floated.

Once again thanks to the good company and enthusiasm of all our guests, we have had another very enjoyable season. Apart from the unusually strong winds in the early part of the year and the occasional day, or two, of overcast weather, the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen displayed its natural beauty, which amazes us every year.

“What has 2017 in store for Caledonian discovery?

WELCOME TO THE “CALEDONIAN”
The newsletter for Caledonian Discovery.

We have adapted one of our established cruises “Trails and Glens biking” into what is a new idea for Scotland but well established in Europe, our “Bike and Barge” week. You travel through the Great Glen with a combination of the best of intermediate cycling with barge cruising. Carefully chosen routes will cover a variety of terrains from smooth cycle tracks and forest trails to quiet back roads – perfect conditions for our high quality hybrid bikes.

Each day’s ride will be led by our experienced guide, providing stories and information along the way and offering places to visit to suit the interests and requirements of our guests. Daily distances vary from 7-18 miles (11-29 km), allowing plenty of time to explore and relax. At any point of the journey, guests are very welcome to stay on board and enjoy cruising on the barge.

2017 also marks the 195th year of the Caledonian Canal. The canal was conceived as a way of providing much-needed employment to the Highland region and to provide a safer passage from the north east of Scotland to the south west. First surveyed in 1773 by James Watt, the idea only came to life when an Act of Parliament, in 1803, was awarded and the digging started. Finally opening in 1822, 12 years later than anticipated, it cost £910,000, and employed over 3,000 local people in its construction.

As important 2017 also marks the 55th year of the building of Ros Crana in Tielrode, Belgium.(1962)

Since her introduction to the fleet she has provided a wonderful, stable platform to provide all that Caledonian Discovery has to offer. We have found some people prefer Ros Crana over Fingal and vice versa. They each have a unique character, but which ever barge people declare their loyalty to, it is resolute!

Four or seven days cruising in the Highlands of Scotland with access to activities, scenery, fun and adventures, with delicious food and the company of like-minded souls, it is a great way to relax.

If you are planning a family holiday please remember the barge is an ideal way to celebrate a family holiday or a group reunion. It is always available, dates permitting, for charter. The film “The Dark Mile” and TV

The film “The Dark Mile” and TV

In 2016 Caledonian Discovery’s barge “Fingal of Caledonia”, was used in the making of the film the “Dark Mile”. Starring Rebecca Calder, Deirdre Mullins, Paul Brannigan, Finlay MacMillan and Sheila Hancock, the film will premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival on the 26th of June 2017. It is a tense psychological horror-thriller, with the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen used as a backdrop.

You may also be gripped by the ITV Sunday night thriller “The Loch”, Chanel 4 Tim and Pru’s cruising the canal in March. In May we had the company of the Scottish actress comedian Elaine C Smith. One of Scotland’s finest performers, her shows are cheeky, outspoken and very funny

When she is on tour around the UK she does two things. Firstly, films all the bits between the shows. Secondly always arrives at her next venue, if possible, in a unique way. As we all say in the office there is no better way to arrive than by colourful barge! The series “Burdz Eye View” will be released on ITV in September. From now until early spring, situated near Fort William at the top of Neptune’s staircase on the Caledonian Canal, Ros Crana our comfortable converted barge is an ideal base for a family or a group of friends looking for some peace and adventure.

With six twin en-suite cabins, kitchen, drying room, a dedicated lounge and dining area, the barge is an ideal base to explore the surrounding countryside. Walks and bike rides are available along the canal tow path, with skiing and hill walks all close by.

If you would prefer and new for 2019/20, we are also offering bed and continental breakfast aboard Ros Crana until early spring.
For bed and breakfast the rates are £90 per cabin again with a minimum 2-night stay. (The kitchen in this offer is not available for the guests to use.)

We are happy to announce we will be providing the raffle prize to the “ Fort William Mountain Festival “. Offering a holiday for two people to cruise and bike the Great Glen, it includes access to bikes and helmets, all food and accommodation. All monies raised, from the raffle, will go towards the continuation of this five day festival of films, lectures, competitions, stories and laughs.

April 2020 will mark the start of our 25th season of providing activity holidays along the Caledonian canal. With space to breathe, wonderful views and no cars required, in all our holidays we include a local, knowledgeable guide. They enrich the walk, cycle, canoe trip with relevant stories and lead you to the finest view points before returning to the barge; allowing you time to relax in the saloon area or freshen up in your en-suite cabin, before your meal is served, prepared by the resident chef.

Here at Caledonian Discovery, we’ve had a busy start to the season and are enjoying having the barges back running our holidays along the whole of the Great Glen.

Coronavirus is far from over, but in Scotland all legal rules and restrictions have been lifted. We are not out of the woods yet though, so we have decided to keep some of last year’s policies to help us to run safely and responsibly. There are strong government recommendations that we are working to with regard to face coverings, and we are continuing our use of lateral flow testing to try and keep the barges as a Covid-free bubble for guests and crew. We know that you will appreciate that we do not want to lose a whole barge crew to illness as this would inevitably lead to the cancellation of cruises. We hope this will help give our guests peace of mind about our holidays and that you will support our efforts.

Our 2022 season is very well booked but there are some spaces still available. Do get in touch if you need help to find what you are looking for. The 2020 amended Terms and Conditions gave flexibility that was needed, and these terms still apply to the bookings transferred from 2020 to 2022. We kept some significant flexibility for bookings made over the last year and have kept these in the current version: Terms and Conditions

A holiday in the Highlands is a wonderful option for 2022 and if you can’t book the date you want, there is plenty of availability in 2023. If you like to seek out spectacular destinations, and if you like a holiday of discovery with some gentle adventure, then you have a treat in store! We hope you will be able to join us in the coming year and look forward to welcoming you onto one of our holidays soon.

Gifts from the Great Glen

A late Spring and slow start but we were back and launching the first of our cruises, the Moray Firth Wildlife cruise, aboard Ros Crana with Wildlife Guide, Fred Gordon.

Exploring the Great Glen by boat gives you the chance to explore wilderness areas that you just don’t see any other way and sure enough nature delivered with a wonderful chance to see dolphins right up against the boat!

What to expect on one of our Adventure Cruises

Whether you choose a Wildlife specific cruise, one of our Walking focus trips or maybe you like to dip your toe in the water with “ Canoe the Great Glen”, each trip has a tailor made feel, created by our Team. End of Season Round up

As we put our hardworking boats on holiday we wanted to reflect on the 2021 season and thanks to our guests it’s been a good one, despite the hurdles at the beginning of the year ( which need no introduction!)

Our stalwart boats, Ros Crana and Fingal could probably find their own way up and down the Great Glen! They have certainly clocked up a few miles along this fantastic natural way through the Highlands. It never ceases to deliver as we go through the holiday season, the changing colours in Autumn are particularly spectacular and the Spring is the best time to catch the wildlife on the wing or the fin!

Thank goodness we were able to get started again this year and welcome our wonderful guests back on board. It was touch and go there for a while and to say that we had a wobbly start, our nerves were clattering, eagerly awaiting the go-ahead as to when we could get back on the water, was a worrying time. I am sure all of you were feeling the same anxiety, that we would not be able to come together again and enjoy everything the Highlands has in abundance, it’s been tough for everyone but we got there in the end, thank goodness!

New to 2021

We introduced a Fort to Fort Biking cruise as a half-week trip exploring the western part of the Great Glen this year. We can take advantage of the many forest and towpath trails accessible straight off the boats and as with our other holidays, relaxed cruising and interesting walks are also available so you can still enjoy good variety in this short 4-day cruise.
We paired Fort to Fort Biking with Discover Loch Ness which makes up the other half of the week. Loch Ness rarely needs an introduction and we take a close pass by the famous Castle Urquhart which always makes an impression. Once again we enjoy time to explore ashore with walks available in Fort Augustus, Foyers and Loch Dochfour.

From short rides to longer trails, biking along the Great Glen is a pretty fine way to get up close to the scenery, wildlife and all the benefits of exploring car-free! We have plenty of bikes on board so if you are thinking this may be an option for next year and you don’t want to haul your bike, no bother we have plenty!

The Crew!

Martin and Adam are both skippers throughout the Season along with Dave who, as ever, did a great job standing in for Martin. They are supported by an enthusiastic and friendly team of people. As you may know, the crew play such a big part and add so much to the enjoyment of our cruises; we want to shout out about them and give them a big thank you for all the support over recent months.

Bo’suns Steve and Lucy keep everything working on the boats and the skippers ticking over, ably backed up by Joshua who did a great stand-in slot. We are also lucky to have our returning Guides Chris and Ankia who help show the guests the very best of the Great Glen and offer their expertise and knowledge to enrich our environment. We also welcomed Alfie back for a stand-in guide slot too.

Adam and Martin are a bit more office-based now and enjoying working a bit more with Anne Marie and Melissa, our brilliant office team. We’ve plenty still to organise for 2022 which looks like it will be a really busy year and will be here before we know it!

Catering

Isn’t it great to know you don’t have to think about mealtimes? Onboard catering is a big part of the enjoyment factor. Chefs Steve and Lucy produced wonderful food to a delicious master plan created by Liz who also did start-up and stand-in weeks. Our flexible team always deliver and Adam did a stand-in chef week too, showing his brilliant versatility.

He is the only crew member ever with us to have been skipper, guide, bosun and chef so he’s quite proud of that!
We’ve also had Carrie’s massive support to keep operations going smoothly, as well as driving and filling in any other gaps needed!

It’s been good to have Neil back driving too, as ever sharing good stories and friendly company on the minibus run.
Lastly, all our friends and temporary crew that have joined us for the odd weeks here and there.

Fort William Mountain Festival is happening soon and we can’t wait

A celebration of the mountains and a passion for the outdoors, we are proud to support the Festival that draws so many to share this wonderful part of the world

The Fort William Mountain Festival fills the Outdoor Capital from the 16th to 20th February 2022 at venues in and around the bustling Highland town of Fort William, at the heart of the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’.

The Festival is a warm welcome of celebration and inspiration in our mountains. There are so many events planned with fringe events, workshops on different activities and a fitting tribute to Hamish Macinnes, the first recipient of the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture who sadly passed away on the 22nd November 2020.

Take a look at the Festival Programme where there really is something for everyone.

The main presentations and film nights take place in the Nevis Centre, The Highland Cinema, the Highland Bookshop and Three Wise Monkeys indoor climbing centre. The Festival Launch Night will take place at the Nevis Centre on Wednesday evening and will be a celebration of mountaineering and adventure film-making with Keith Partridge and Paul Diffley. We all like to do our bit for planet and people and for a few years now the whole team behind Caledonian Discovery have been looking at ways we can take a greener and more sustainable approach to our cruise holidays. We have come to the point where we want to do things better in the future and help our guests make the most of our local environment and explore Scotland responsibly.

Once we started the rigorous process and looked at our ways of operating, we realised that we have a way to go to hit our ambitions but that actually getting on board Fingal or Ros Crana, and discovering the Great Glen on a boat does tick a few of the boxes as far as sustainable tourism goes.

With this in mind we wanted to share what we already do and where we are heading on our greener, responsible quest.

Responsible exploration with on-board Guides

On this crowded planet we know we are fortunate as we glide up and down the Great Glen with the chance to take time, stop, breathe, sit and take in the surroundings. Whilst our boats are substantially built we keep the number of guests and crew on board small for a more intimate experience. Over the years, 25 or thereabouts, by operating this way there is ample opportunity to get to know the crew and meet our on board guides. We have experts for the duration of the cruise from wildlife to walking guides and water activity instructors. This provides for key knowledge, insight and history of both nature and landscape shared with our guests who inevitably gain a more immersive experience and deeper respect for the visited space as a result of this.

The conversations had on board often develop to exploring the wild spaces on and off the boats and with our expert guides and enriched knowledge of the spaces we explore, our guests as a consequence are really respectful and caring, engaged with the landscape and wildlife.

Our boats are a sanctuary of a place that seemingly have their own personality. Adam ( one of our skippers ) has a sentimental fondness for Fingal which to anyone that has spent time on board our barges or any boat knows the connection you feel as you approach anywhere by water in a community of like-minded souls for the week. The boat seems to envelope and look after you, waiting like an old friend as you come and go making the holiday more about the destination and voyage itself. The time constraint isn’t an issue and we love the “go slow for travel and adventure “ that our guests embrace.

Connection back to the water and wildlife through activities

Anyone that has spent any time with us knows the activities we have on board both boats. We do tailor cruises for certain experiences but our canoes, bikes, SUPs and small sailing boat are all on board anytime for people to use.
Our activities are people-powered! Currently, it is a “necessary evil” that we have a diesel engine on board, and our maximum number of guests ( 12 on board ) making their way up and down the Great Glen, sometimes under their own steam takes the pressure off the same amount of people using this popular stretch in several cars. We are a truly car-free option !

Water Wise
Part and parcel of being on a boat we are ever conscious of the need to respect and save water through practical lo flow loos and potable water, ensuring that anything we use on board are chemical-free products. By virtue of being on a boat we have long implemented effective metering of energy and we take great care to conserve water supply to reduce needless waste, of course, we adhere to the 3 R’s! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Taste our Best
Catering is done on board with our resident cooks. We source from local suppliers and businesses and we are committed to reducing our non-recyclable waste! As guests plan their trips they often pre-order meals which save on food waste, this way we have ample time to support our local suppliers. Obviously straws are out! Gone are the single-use plastics and we have refill water bottles for guests to use.

Our stance is pretty much to buy anything locally! Whether food, beer, or gifts this way money is being fed back into the community and to the crew and local business, not some unknown corporate organisation.

We are now looking at ways that we can take the next steps in improving our carbon footprint. We have created our Environmental Policy, we have a commitment to working with the local Woodland Trust or Trees for Life. We want to shore up plans for carbon offsetting and to focus on some key operational changes on board to trim our energy use for better carbon reduction.

Operating largely in remote areas of the Highlands and waterways of Scotland, it is important to us that we help to maintain and preserve the natural and cultural beauty of the area by minimising our impact on the local environment.

We like to think that our guests and the connection they make with us on our boats, discovering this part of Scotland, that they have really enjoyed their time, become friends and for the time they spend on a Caledonian Cruise feel more a “temporary local” and less “tourist”.

Spring Walks in the Great Glen

Spring Walks in the Great Glen

You may only want to whisper it, but we’re nearly there now: Winter’s End. The Vernal Equinox is upon us, the days are lengthening, and the weather is, dare I say it, “improving”. Springtime in the Highlands can seem an elusive entity, but rain or shine, or more often both in rapid succession, it is high time to come out of hibernation, get outside, and make the most of whatever the day offers.

The Great Glen is the ideal place to shake the winter drear out of your bones and get your legs into the rhythm of walking. Whatever the weather is doing and whatever your fitness level, there are plentiful paths to take you through the diverse landscapes of the area and show off the diversity of our flora and fauna. You will find everything from quiet loch-side ambles through birch, alder, and bluebell wood, to brisk river walks in native pine forests, as well as leg-burning climbs up Munros with panoramic views. There is literally something for everyone here and spring is the perfect time to stravaig and see what you might discover.

A great short outing with loads to offer is the walk from Fort Augustus up to Lady Falls . Whether in smirr (of rain (or snow): to fall gently and softly in fine clouds, to drizzle) or sun, this is a delightful route that heads just up into the hills to a secretive waterfall. The route is only a few miles out and back but it passes through lush pasture into mature woodland before hugging fast to the side of a wild ravine. There’s a signpost for Lady Falls at the start of the woodland track, and subsequent signs along the way make route finding straightforward. Keep an eye out for red squirrels here, they can be striking against the new green foliage.

The path skirts the edge of Culachy manor past estate buildings and a deer pen holding some very mature stags. Past the deer pen the path hugs the side of the steepening ravine carved out by the river Tarff. Gnarled old birch trees have contorted themselves into fantastical shapes, and the views up Glen Tarff through the greenery are magical. There are mature oak, beech, alder, rowan, and hazel. The hazel tree was widely cultivated by the Gaels as a source of food, and the flexible, strong shoots were put to a variety of uses , Keep an eye out for raptors circling the skyline over the hills.

Lady Falls soon appears and is a good place to get the flask out and take a few photos before heading back. Retrace your steps back to the cemetery, or make a right on Ardachy road, cross the bridge and follow the signs down to the shore of Loch Ness where you will meet the South Loch Ness Trail . This is a great place to watch the spring lambs, or see what migratory birds are having a layover in the green pastures.

Another area worth heading to when the weather is less-than-ideal is the river Garry. The river runs about three miles from the power dam at the bottom of Loch Garry before emptying into Loch Oich. It is a broad, fast-flowing river with deep, dark pools given cover by mature beech, birch, and oak trees along its length. Salmon still migrate here and during runs can be spied making leaps up the fast-flowing rapids. There is a clear and easy path along its bank leading to Whitebridge and the Ciste Dubh Forestry Commission car park.

This is the perfect area to wander about the river, streams, and forest. Along the river, whose banks are carpeted in bluebells come April/May, keep an eye out for otters and dippers. Once at Whitebridge you can cross over and either go right up the Ciste Dubh trail to the dam, or you can go left and back along the River Garry on the opposite side for a ways before branching right up the Alt na Calliche trail . This path leads through lush evergreen forest where you can spot the poetically-named glittering wood moss , waved silk moss , and the little shaggy moss . Look and listen for crested tits in the forest!

The path will soon cross a bridge and head uphill with a change in the forest floor with plenty of bilberry and heather. The forest opens up with mature beech and Scots pine trees along the route, and I’m sure pine martens and wild cats lurk about here, though chances of seeing them are slim. Still, look for their signs in the softer sections of the path.

Not far up there is an overlook at a waterfall, and from here you can either meander back the way you came, or continue up the steepening path to the top of the waterfall which eventually ends at a forestry track. Go left on the track heading down, where there are stands of old birch trees, keeping an eye out for a trail on the left which leads to the first footbridge and back to the River Garry.

Even if it’s a bit dreich out there’s always plenty of colour and life along the river and in the forest to brighten the mood.

When you’ve got the weather and fitness on your side, the two Munros over Loch Lochy, Sròn a’ Choire Ghairbh and Meall na Teanga offer a superb yet straightforward hillwalk . The route starts with a couple of miles through a flat forest track (cycling down is an option)before the hill path branches off on the right. From here it’s a steep and rocky ascent beneath the imposing ridgeline to the bealach below the two summits.

Sròn a’ Choire Ghairbh, or “Nose of the Rough Corrie” (937m) is the summit to the right and faces south so is the first to be clear of snow. The path can still be sodden and very slippery, so take care. From the top you have a commanding view of the Great Glen to the East, the Loch Quoich hills and Knoydart in the West, and the Glen Affric peaks to the North.

For Meall na Teanga, or “Round Hill of the Tongue” (918m), go back down to the bealach and back up the path directly opposite. Snow can linger on this northern approach path, and is best avoided if this is the case. If not, and the way to the top is clear, your efforts will be met with fine views of the Nevis Range and Loch Linnhe.

The first peaks of warm(ish) weather are always special, and these two will get your legs and imagination firing, ready to do more. Or perhaps you’ve never attempted a Munro before? These would be ideal for first-timers, and this article ” preparation for hillwalking ” is a good place to start with the preparation.

Chance Encounters in the Wild

One of the most rewarding aspects of getting outdoors, whether for a quick stroll or an all-day wander, is that you never know what you might see and encounter. Sometimes it might only be a particularly colorful patch of moss (and I encourage everyone to get acquainted with mosses), or it could be the first time you spot a sea eagle, but these unexpected encounters can often bring a spark of magic to an otherwise routine day. Even if we just catch glimpses of critters and creepers going about their daily lives, we become more involved in the larger natural world going on around us all the time.

I remember the first time I came across a lapwing. I was out for a walk on the Isle of Lewis and spotted a bird in a field doing a very odd, loping mid-air dance while making an even stranger call. It was so close and I stopped and stared for a minute at this curious little bird with its flick of feather perched over its head, having no idea what it was. Afterwards, I described it to a friend who is well-versed in all things feathered, and he informed me it was a northern lapwing. Not particularly exotic or rare in the UK, but now I can spot them across a field while driving a car, and I would know that call instantly.

The opportunity to catch nature doing its thing is always present, and indeed we are often the ones caught unawares. I’ve pulled off a busy road in a lay-by to witness an otter swim up to the shoreline and munch its fish supper right in front of me.

Sometimes you get lucky!

Camping in a remote glen one night, and getting on with dinner in the fading light, an owl swooped silently out of nowhere just overhead, perhaps to see what I was having for tea (and was clearly unimpressed my bowl of noodles contained zero mice). And I’ve lost count of the beats my heart has missed as I stumbled too close to a ptarmigan’s resting place among the rocky nooks of a hilltop and we both leapt away half scared to death.

Most of us get out when we can and take these wildlife encounters as they come. The knowledge and familiarity we gain of the mosses and lichens, the insects, trees, fungi, four-legged and winged creatures, and the relationships they have with each other and their environment accumulates slowly over a lifetime and is not something that can be rushed. Sure we can all read articles and look at photos on the internet, but there is no substitution for the actual experience of things because that is what stays with you.

Take a Chance to immerse Yourself

One of the best ways to discover nature is alongside someone who has dedicated their life to studying it and passing that knowledge on to the public. Fred Gordon is now retired, but he spent his career as Head Ranger for Aberdeenshire Council as well as a lecturer in countryside management. He now forsakes his hard-earned leisure time a few times a year to be the resident expert aboard the Caledonian Discovery Wildlife Cruises. These cruises explore either the Moray Firth sea lochs to the east, or those of Loch Linnhe in the west, and they are one of the more unique ways to immerse yourself in the outdoors and give yourself the chance to see some of Scotland’s best wildlife.

It is an exceptional opportunity to spend a week aboard a unique Dutch canal boat and away from the roads and traffic. Not only do you pass a good deal of time traveling on the water, where you can spot dolphins, seals, osprey, and other raptors, but there are also daily side-trips ashore guided by Fred where his knowledge of the local flora comes into its own. Fred assures me that his days as a lecturer are very much over and that the cruises are not week-long classroom sessions. He is there simply to explain what they come across on their walks, cycles, or canoe trips. What he enjoys the most, apart from spending the time outdoors of course, is the coming together of people from different places and backgrounds, the experiences that can be shared back-and-forth, and witnessing people see things they’ve never seen before. He relates a time in Shetland when he saw a fellow get unusually excited over seeing an oystercatcher, but realised that while common for the UK, not so much in Uganda where this man was from. Everything seems a bit extraordinary the first time you see it. Just like me and the lapwing.

But if you can’t make it out for a full week’s cruise, try and stop by Loch Ruthven if you’re ever in the area. Bring binoculars as it’s one of the best places to catch Slavonian grebes, and the lochside birchwood is a great place to potter around (nice mosses!).

Also, there have been numerous recent sightings of grebes and sea eagles around the lochs in Stratherrick. Try the South Lochness Trail between Whitebridge and Foyers, which follows the river Foyers through woodland and some pastureland. Or head up into the Monadhliath Hills for more expansive views and a chance to see raptors hunting over the open moorland.

I would just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in our community a Happy Christmas and New Year! I sincerely hope you are all keeping well these winter months. This year hasn’t been without its challenges – navigating through Covid and then the surprise closure of the Canal in Spring – but we did our best to make it back to smooth waters.

As you can see from the photo we are getting our fair share of winter conditions here in the Highlands. Nighttime temps have dipped down to around -15 degrees C, and we had ice forming in the canal. Good thing we got the work done on the Ros Crana when we did!

We’re just now busy finalising the 2024 Calendar which we will post up on our website in the next week. There are a few changes in the works, and we will keep you all abreast of those as they take shape!

In our spare time, we’ve also been doing some navigation sessions with Josh and Chris with a view to getting skipper qualifications in the next year. So best of luck to them with their studies and training!

This past Friday we braved the icy temps to take the crew, who work hard making these cruises possible, out for a meal in Fort William then onto Fort William’s “premier” nightclub for a little boogie. Unfortunately our bosun Andy made a valiant effort to join us, but the weather had other ideas (see photo below).

We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to some new adventures in 2023! Meanwhile, we have been working on our future season planning and are pleased to announce that the 2024 schedule is now live, which you can view here. 2024 Calendar

We have been reflecting on 2022 and indeed thinking about the last few years. We now must consider how to achieve our goals as a responsible and sustainable holiday business.

Like many other businesses, we have faced significant challenges through the pandemic and the recovery period. We need to look ahead rather than dwell on the past, but these issues are having a sustained impact on us, compounded by problems with Scottish Canals, as well as the closing of our local boatyard.

We have always tried our best to keep the price of our cruises down, and in the past have managed to keep price rises fairly minimal. We are very mindful of the importance of affordable holidays like ours, and we love being able to offer our getaway to the Highlands, helping you access all the wild spaces we have on our doorstep. However, looking at other comparable holidays, our prices have stayed artificially low and this led to us being in a difficult position over the last couple of years.

I now have to correct these imbalances so that we can invest properly in our amazing team, who make it possible for us to offer such wonderful holidays. We want to give them more time and space to enjoy their work, and also continue to invest in the barges and equipment. You will probably not be surprised that we need to make some major price rises to achieve this, and the 2024 season has been set at a different price point.

We have also reviewed our 2023 prices. We will continue to avoid surcharging existing bookings, but our current 2023 prices will only stay in place for new bookings until 31-Jan 2023.

We are aware of the challenges many of us face with the increase in the cost of living, so we want to help smooth this passage for existing guests and supporters. We are therefore offering a considerable launch discount for 2024 cruises of £200 per person for a full week’s cruise. The existing discount for 2023 will also remain in place. These discounts will expire on 31-Jan 2023 and at that point the 2023 cruises will have the price rise applied.

We are keen not to lose sight of what has been important to us and to all of you over the years. Our core ethos is to deliver sustainable slow adventures with happy crew and guests enjoying every day on board with us. As we focus on the future we don’t want to lose sight of that and we really look forward to welcoming you for an experience, not just a holiday, as you become temporary locals and friends with us on board our boats.

Winter Wandering

By mid-February I think most of us are ready for spring. There aren’t many people going around at the moment exclaiming, “if we could only have 6 more weeks of winter!”, at least in the UK. We’ve done Christmas and New Year, had some snow, now if only we could hoist the sun higher and warm the place up a bit!

It’s perfectly natural that we go into semi-hibernation during winter. Shortened daylight hours coupled with inclement weather hedge in the days’ possibilities, and we find ourselves staring at a curtailed menu of things we want to do. Indeed, in the midst of a Scottish winter, it’s often hard to find anything on the menu under the heading “Out of Doors”. I’m sure whoever came up with the old adage “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” never spent February in Scotland. Trust me. There is such a thing as bad weather.

That said, it becomes all the more imperative to get out when you can. I firmly believe that every season has its own advantages, and winter is no exception. For photography, the light is simply better. There is not the summer midday haze, and the as the sun sits lower in the sky you get better contrast to the landscape throughout the day. I’ve taken some of my favourite photographs in winter, and getting out and about with the camera makes a good excuse to leave the house.

It’s hard to beat winter for dramatic light

Plus, there is the sense of calm and rest that comes this time of year, after the holiday rush has passed. The pace of modern life is hectic and full of distractions, and the chance to slow down and not do too much is a healthy counterbalance to that. I find that even short walks this time of year do so much good, just to get out and moving around in fresh air a few times a week to break up the indoor routine. Forests make good sheltered places to visit, and all that moisture and rainfall brings out the colours in the mosses, trees, and lichen.

Also, as the roads aren’t busy, it’s a good time to get out and explore new places. On days off, I’ll find somewhere on the map I’ve never been, load the dog up, and go for a little wander around without any definite plan in mind. There’s almost always something interesting out there if you make an effort.

So while the backend of winter might not top the list of “Times of Year We Wish Would Never End”, there are some very positive aspects to it, even if the best one may be that it eaventually turns to spring!

Now that the end-of-season to-do list has finally been ticked, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our guests for yet another outstanding year.

Whether it was your first cruise with us or your tenth, we are thankful you chose to spend your time with us, and I can honestly say it was a privilege to have you onboard! We seem to attract some of the friendliest people from the UK and across the world, who bring fresh enthusiasm and enjoyment to each trip.

We have been doing cruises in the Great Glen for over 25 years, and we get just as excited at the beginning of each new season as we did at the first. I can say for certain that this is down to the fact that we get to meet such great folks every week, and show them this wonderful part of the world. At the risk of stating the very obvious, but we absolutely love traveling by boat through the waterways of the Great Glen. There is nothing quite like it, and we are always grateful that our guests enjoy it as much as we do!
